On May 18, 2009, William Lowery Baird, II pled guilty to Murder and Leaving the Scene of an Accident.

The charges arose out of a June 7, 2007 incident where Baird was driving at an excessive rate of speed down University Drive when he rear-ended a motorcycle driven by Thomas L. Polk. Polk was killed as a result of the collision. Baird fled the scene, but was chased down by witnesses and subsequently placed under arrest.

Judge Karen Hall sentenced Baird to 20 years in prison.
